What is a passphrase?

The Trezor Suite passphrase functionality is an advanced method used for increasing the security of your assets, helping to protect your accounts from unauthorized access.

A passphrase functions like an extra 'security tag' tied to your recovery seed, which is the most critical element of your cryptocurrency security.

• Passphrases can't be hacked as they're not stored on the device

Whereas your recovery seed stores all information needed to recover your funds by granting access to your 'Standard' wallet, a passphrase extends the recovery seed, adding an extra layer of security to your accounts.

Passphrases are used to create unique hidden wallets ‘within’ your Standard wallet and control access to them, without requiring a second hardware wallet or recovery seed. This means your funds are safe, even if your recovery seed is compromised.
